THE IDEALIST - Justin Peters
In Publishers Lunch the book’s editor calls it “a narrative history of the open access movement, framed by the life and shocking suicide of Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz”.
There’s no official copy on this yet, but the author frames the book’s central conflict as “on one hand, those who want information to be free—users, sharers, Internet junkies with little interest in preserving the mechanisms of big media; on the other hand, those who want it to be expensive—producers and institutions that see free content and file sharing as financially destructive forces that will eliminate jobs and reduce artists’ incentive to create. Both sides are motivated by an almost monomaniacal certitude that they are in the right, and that terrible things will happen if they do not prevail.
“The Idealists will tell the story of these people and the last thirty years on the frontiers of copyright idealism. The book will introduce readers to these lively and vitally important -- though often hidden -- battles, the men and women who fought them on both sides, their importance to the present and their implications for the future. Using Aaron Swartz’s life as a loose frame, the book will trace the development of modern data activism from the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in the 1960s to” the present.
