Mikhail Bulgakov was born in Kiev in 1891. He studied medicine and graduated as a doctor from Kiev University in 1916, but left the medical field in 1920 to become a novelist and playwright.
In 1925 he finished writing his satirical novella The Heart of a Dog, which remained unpublished in the Soviet Union until 1987. He is best known for his novel The Master and Margarita, which the New York Times Book Review called one of the greatest novels of the Twentieth Century.
