WONDERLAND - Stacey D’Erasmo
"The world of WONDERLAND is authentic, vibrant, and genuine. Stacey D’Erasmo explores the delight and terror of second chances. A great read!" - Michael Stipe
"WONDERLAND is a witty and unflinching novel about life, love, art and sound checks. A deep howl and a bittersweet song, this is D'Erasmo's best yet." - Sam Lipsyte, author of The Ask
Anna Brundage is a rock star. She is tall and sexy, with a powerhouse voice and an unforgettable mane of red hair. She came out of nowhere, an immediate indie sensation. And then, life happened.
Touring through Europe in an attempt to reclaim both her career and her place in culture, Anna tries to make sense of her life. Equipped with a tour bus, a resentful manager, four drug-addled band members and a host of bad memories, Anna strives to leave her mark on her own life. She is trapped in her own mind and searches Europe, her childhood and her relationships in pursuit of her own wonderland, which is also her most powerful album.
In the vein of William Faulkner’s ABSALOM, ABSALOM!, WONDERLAND confronts one person’s version of her own life, and how our subjective minds can twist and manipulate our own histories in order to make way for the present.
WONDERLAND, like its protagonist, is “the last chord that happens in the mind of the listener, as if he is remembering a sound, which, in reality, he has never heard before.”
Stacey D’Erasmo, a Stegner Fellow in Fiction at Stanford University from 1995-1997, is the author of the novels TEA, which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year; A SEAHORSE YEAR, which was named a Best Book of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle and Newsday, and won both a Lambda Literary Award and a Ferro-Grumley Award; and THE SKY BELOW, which was reviewed on the cover of The New York Times Book Review.
She is the recipient of a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship in Fiction, and was recently named a Lambda Literary Outstanding Mid-Career Novelist Prize Winner. Her essays, features, and reviews have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, The Boston Review, Bookforum, and Ploughshares, among other publications. She is an assistant professor of writing at Columbia University.
Stacey has had many admirers overseas over the years but she has never been translated before. Think of her as a softer Jeanette Winterson. We believe this novel will be her breakthrough internationally.
